Types of Automotive Transmissions.

What is Transmission?
A transmission is a device to transmit controlled application of torque/power to another device. The term transmission properly refers to the whole drive train, including clutch,
gearbox, transfer case, propeller shaft (for rear-wheel drive vehicles), differential, and
final drive shafts.

Different Types of Transmission are
1) Manual Transmission: This type transmission consists of flywheel, clutch assy, drive
shaft, counter shaft fitted with no of gear & pinions. The gears are termed as 5 speed, 6
speed and so on. The gear shifting occurs by shifting lever & clutch operated by driver.

2) Automated Manual Transmission (AMT): It is similar to a manual transmission, except
that the sensors and actuators perform the clutch work and shift gears. A car with an
AMT does not have a clutch pedal; there’s only the accelerator and brake pedal.

3) Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT): iMT is a manual gearbox, it has gears and a
gear lever that looks exactly similar to any manual gear lever. But the drive experience is
more like an automatic car.

4) Automatic Transmission (AT): An automatic transmission (AT) consists of torque
converter, pump, fluid valve body, planetary gear set, servo etc. Gears are termed as P R
N D S L & so on. Gears are shifted by computer controlled solenoids determined by
vehicle speed & fluid pressure. These are multi-speed transmission used in motor
vehicles that does not require any driver input to change forward gears under normal
driving conditions.

5) Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT): CVT transmission consists of a push belt,
variable pulleys, torque converter, valve body, planetary gears etc. A continuously
variable transmission (CVT) is an automatic transmission that can change seamlessly
through a continuous range of gear ratios. This contrasts with other transmissions that
provide a limited number of gear ratios in fixed steps.

6) Semi-Automatic Transmission: It is a multi-speed motor vehicle transmission where
part of its operation is automated (typically the clutch actuation), but the driver’s input is
still required to launch the vehicle from a standstill and to manually change gears.

7) Dual Clutch Transmission: A dual-clutch transmission (DCT) is a type of multi-speed
vehicle transmission system, that uses two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets.
The clutches are operated by hydraulic control unit to while shifting.
